Suspicious fire outside downtown Nanaimo restaurant under investigation

Nanaimo RCMP are probing a suspicious fire that broke out early this morning outside Bar Luna, a popular downtown restaurant located at 7 Victoria Road.

The fire, reported at around 4:50 a.m. on Friday, August 9th, was first spotted by a police officer on patrol.

Responding firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the building’s exterior.

Despite their efforts, the fire caused significant damage to the restaurant’s exterior, while the interior suffered from smoke and water damage.

“Based on discussions with City of Nanaimo Fire inspectors, the fire is deemed suspicious in nature and was most likely intentionally set,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

In the wake of the incident, police are canvassing the area for CCTV footage and seeking any potential witnesses.
