All candidates running in the Esquimalt-Colwood riding for the upcoming provincial election will be gathered under the same roof this October to talk about their environmental values and goals.
This debate was organized by seven local community and non-profit groups who focus on averting the climate crisis through advocating for better provincial policies.
The event is to be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2nd, at the Esquimalt United Church, which is located at 500 Admirals Road.
It will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person.
The candidates that are running in the Esquimalt-Colwood electoral district—which includes Vic West and View Royal—are Darlene Rotchford for the BC NDPs, Camille Currie for the BC Green Party and John Wilson for the Conservative Party of BC.
The BC NDPs Rotchford stepped in as a candidate for Mitzi Dean who recently announced she would not be seeking re-election.
She has a career background in mental health and addiction services and has been a Township of Esquimalt Councillor since 2022.
The Green’s Camille Currie is a small business owner living in the Westshore, whose main focus going into the election is improving the healthcare system to encourage more family doctors to come to BC.
The Conservative’s John Wilson is a proponent of business as well, as the owner of Wilson’s Transportation on Vancouver Island.
Wilson was just announced as the Conservative’s candidate in the Esquimalt-Colwood electoral district on September 10th..
None of these candidates have specified their environmental values or goals thus far in the pre-campaign period that is leading up to the election.
This debate was organized by Citizens Environmental Network in Colwood, Climate and the Arts, Creatively United for the Planet Society, Esquimalt Climate Organizers, Esquimalt United Church Justice Team, Gorge Waterway Action Society and the South Island Climate Action Network.
