The community of Sooke will get to decide if they want to fund a replacement for the aging skate park in town.
Last month, the Sooke and Electoral Area Parks and Recreation Commission (SEAPARC) revealed two options of what the new Sooke Skate Park will look like for feedback.
Now that the feedback has been taken in, work will be done to make a new mock-up that combines the two designs and incorporates as much as possible from the pubic engagement campaign.
The current Sooke Skate Park was built in 1997 by the Rotary Club of Sooke.
Present day, the park has fallen into disrepair and needs a replacement which the Capital Regional District (CRD) has allotted for.
However, the CRD only had initial funding for the designs, so now they must seek new funding in order to actually build the new Sooke Skate Park.
The CRD has received approval to proceed with an ‘alternative approval process’ in order to allow borrowing to move this project forward.
This process allows the community to decide whether the CRD will be approved to incur debt through funding to build the project.
Additionally, the CRD says they will be fundraising and seeking sponsorship to add some features not in their current budget, such as more lighting and a covered area.
