Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has ended deal with the Liberal government

In 2022, the NDP signed a ‘Supply and Confidence Agreement’ with the Liberal Party which has now been terminated by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.

The deal was made initially to mutually benefit both parties.

The Liberals only secured a minority government and needed help passing legislation without having it voted down by the Conservatives and Bloc Québécois, whereas the NDP got the Liberals support on their initiatives.

Singh says the reason for pulling out of the deal is that he believes the Liberals are supporting corporate interests over the Canadian people.

“The fact is, the Liberals are too weak, too selfish and too beholden to corporate interests to fight for people,” Singh said in a video address to Canadians on Wednesday, September 4th.

“They cannot stop the Conservatives. But we can.”

According to the NDP, the end of this agreement means that it is a possibility that the majority of parliament could vote against the Liberal government on a confidence measure.

A non-confidence vote could prompt an early election for Canadians.

As of this publication, no comment has been provided by the Office of the Prime Minister, nor the Conservatives.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poiliervre did turn to X where made a tweet in which he only referred to the NDP Leader as “Sellout Singh”.

“Two years ago, Sellout Singh sold out workers and signed on to a costly coalition with Justin Trudeau that hiked taxes, ballooned food costs, doubled housing costs and unleashed crime and chaos in our once safe streets,” Poilievre tweeted.

In this tweet, Poilievre also criticizes Singh’s politics and refusal to state whether the NDP would push for an early election via a non-confidence vote.

Poilievre refers to the potential election as a “carbon tax election”, as his goal is to get rid of the carbon tax, but the Liberals and NDP look to keep it and possibly increase it.
