BC Transit is revamping the look of its bus fleet, introducing a fresh green livery as part of its push towards climate-friendly public transit.
This fall, BC Transit will begin rolling out 89 new buses, including eight heavy-duty and 81 light-duty vehicles, all adorned in the vibrant green livery, signalling a commitment to environmental sustainability.
The new design marks the first significant update to BC Transit’s fleet appearance in 17 years. The green livery will cover the front of the bus, blending into a crisp white at the back, with a diagonal swoop at the centre to create a dynamic sense of motion, said BC Transit in a media release.
The term “livery” refers to the design on the exterior of a vehicle, encompassing the colours, logos, and graphics that distinguish BC Transit’s buses on the road.
One of the practical benefits of the new livery is its streamlined maintenance process. The design, which relies on a single standard green colour, is easier to apply and repair.
This efficiency will help buses get back on the road faster and reduce maintenance costs, allowing BC Transit to operate more smoothly across the province.
As part of BC Transit’s Low Carbon Fleet Program, this initiative is in line with the Province’s CleanBC Roadmap. The introduction of the green livery is a public statement of BC Transit’s dedication to reducing pollution by encouraging more people to choose public transit over cars, thereby lowering carbon emissions in communities.
The new design will also feature on the electric bus fleet, which is expected to begin arriving in early 2025.
While the new look will apply to all new buses, BC Transit has clarified that existing buses will not be retrofitted with the green livery. As a result, riders will continue to see a mix of designs on the road until the older fleet is retired.
The updated buses are set to launch in the fall of 2024.
