Mayor Aaron Stone has been Ladysmith’s leader for the past decade, but now he is looking for something new.

Stone will be officially stepping down as Mayor effective September 30th.

“This is a difficult decision that I have come to after many weeks of deliberation and discussion with my family, friends, and closest advisors,” says Mayor Aaron Stone.

“I will spend the next four weeks working with my colleagues to ensure my departure is as smooth as possible.”

He added that it was an honour and a privilege to serve as mayor in his home community

“I want to thank everyone for their support over the years. It has truly been a rewarding and enriching experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Stone concluded.

The Town of Ladysmith says that Mayor Stone will also be stepping down as chair of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, effective the same date.

Until a byelection can be held in Spring 2025 to decide on a new mayor, Councillor Tricia McKay will serve as Acting Mayor starting October 1st.

Following the announcement by the Town of Ladysmith, it was revealed by the South Island Prosperity Partnership (SIPP) that Stone will be their new CEO.

SIPP is an “economic development alliance” that operates as a public-private non-profit.

According to SIPP, their goal is to drive business, diversify the economy and create jobs in the Greater Victoria and south island region.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the talented team at SIPP,” says Stone. “When I decided last year that I would not seek political office in the future, I began to contemplate post-elected life and explore new opportunities.”

He added that nothing really grabbed his interest until he discovered that SIPP was seeking a new CEO.

“The South Island is a vibrant region with immense potential,” Stone continued.

“I am committed to working with our partners and stakeholders to deliver on this potential through continued collaboration and innovation.”
