A mother and child suffered non-life threatening injuries after they were struck by a vehicle on the first full day of students being back at school.

On September 4th, shortly after 2 p.m., West Shore RCMP responded to a serious collision involving two pedestrians at the roundabout located at Peatt Road and Brock Avenue in Langford.

According to police, a 25-year-old mother was crossing the crosswalk with her 11-month-old child in a stroller when a Nissan Pathfinder SUV, travelling at high speed through the roundabout, struck them as it turned onto Brock Avenue.

The pedestrian lights were flashing at the time of the incident.

Emergency services, including BC Emergency Health Services and Langford Fire, quickly arrived on the scene. Fortunately, while visibly upset, the child did not sustain major injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The mother also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital for further care.

The driver, a 24-year-old, received a violation ticket for “Drive Without Due Care and Attention” under the Motor Vehicle Act. Additionally, the vehicle’s owner was issued a Box 1 Notice and Order, requiring the SUV to be towed for a full mechanical inspection.

“It is remarkable, and extremely fortunate, that after a collision like this the mother and child left the scene without life threating injuries,” said Cpl Mike Jacobson, West Shore Municipal Traffic Section.

“We want to thank all of the witnesses who called 911 right away and stayed on scene.”
