Nanaimo RCMP have launched an investigation into a suspicious death after a body was discovered near Bowen Park on Thursday.
The incident, which occurred around noon September 12th, prompted a significant police response to the area surrounding the curling club on Wall Street.
A passerby discovered the body of a man in a small forested area near the railway tracks, according to RCMP.
In a statement, RCMP confirmed that the Serious Crime Unit is now leading the investigation, which they have deemed suspicious.
“The discovery of a deceased male has resulted in the Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit taking the lead on the investigation that is deemed suspicious in nature. The body was discovered by a passerby at approximately noon on Thursday, September 12, 2024 behind the curling club on Wall St in a small forested area near the railway tracks,” said Nanaimo RCMP in a media release.
Following the discovery, police secured the area and called in the BC Coroners Service to assist with the investigation.
Police said the area would remain closed off “for the foreseeable future” as investigators search for forensic evidence.
