BC Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau has lost her seat in the legislature following a closely contested race in the riding of Victoria-Beacon Hill.
Furstenau, who previously represented Cowichan Valley, made the strategic decision to switch ridings for this election but was ultimately defeated by Grace Lore, the former Minister of Children and Family Development in the previous NDP government.
Furstenau, a significant figure in BC politics, was first elected to the legislature in 2017. During her tenure, she played a key role in helping the BC NDP form government through a confidence and supply agreement between the Greens and the New Democrats.
This pivotal alliance allowed the NDP to govern with Green Party support, shaping many of the province’s policies over the past several years, particularly on environmental issues.
However, her decision to run in Victoria-Beacon Hill—a stronghold of the BC NDP—proved challenging. Grace Lore, a prominent member of the previous NDP government, secured the seat with a clear majority, leaving the BC Green Party without its leader in the legislature.
More to come.
