Victoria ranked as one of the world’s best small cities again

Share

Victoria has once again claimed the title of the #1 Small City in the World, according to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.

This marks the second consecutive year that the picturesque waterfront capital of British Columbia has topped the prestigious list, outranking renowned destinations like San Sebastian, Spain; San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; Florence, Italy; and Salzburg, Austria.

“We are humbled and grateful to be recognized for a second time as the #1 Small City in the World by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler,” said Paul Nursey, CEO of Destination Greater Victoria.

“During 2020 and 2021, Destination Greater Victoria transformed its business model, aiming to maximize recovery and success for our members. A key aspect was focusing on earned media, especially in the US market, to set a global tone. It is evident that our brand message is resonating with our target audiences.”

Research indicates that the average stay in the city has grown to 3.6 nights, up from 2.8 in 2023 and 2.3 in 2019. Interest in visiting Greater Victoria continues to increase, with more travellers placing the city high on their must-visit list.

Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, the travel industry’s longest-running and most prestigious accolades, gathered feedback from over 575,000 readers across the United States.

Victoria’s charm lies in its unique mix of old-world allure and modern-day innovation. The city offers expansive green spaces, abundant local wildlife, and a sprawling shoreline that makes it easy to feel connected to nature.

Condé Nast Traveler describes Victoria as more than just a popular day trip from Vancouver; it’s a destination worthy of a full exploration.

“Arrive via one of the world’s most scenic ferry rides across Swartz Bay and check in to the bucket list-worthy Fairmont Empress, where the Fairmont Gold rooms include access to a private waterfront lounge. With a reputation as the most British town in Canada, most restaurants and hotels offer a proper high tea. Check out the Venus Sophia, which offers baked goods,” described the travel publication.

Recognized as an international leader in environmental sustainability, Victoria is home to the annual IMPACT Conference, where innovators from around the world gather to discuss sustainable practices.

Travellers should consider Victoria a must-see destination for its incredible local food, vibrant cultural experiences, and eco-friendly activities. Nursey adds, “From the breathtaking outdoors to the rich culture and history to the incredible hyper-local cuisine, Victoria is among some of the most renowned destinations in the world, and we are committed to offering unforgettable and unique experiences that only Victoria can provide.”
