Auction 101: South Malahat 4-H auction happening today at the Saanich Fair

Labour Day Monday, you have the opportunity to feed family, friends or customers with some choice cuts of meat, while supporting one of the largest rural youth organizations in existence: 4-H.

The South Malahat 4-H Auction includes steers, hogs, rabbits and lambs raised by the South Malahat District 4-H members.

The auction happens on September 5, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. in the beef show ring at the Saanich Fair.

The lambs, steers and hogs will be sold by the pound live weight. (e.g.- 1100 lb steer for $2.00 per lb= $2200 your cost). Your purchase will be delivered for processing at our cost. The kill charge as set by the processing plant, transportation of the carcass to the butcher and cutting and wrapping of the meat is payable by you, the purchaser. You will get to select your specific cutting instructions to the butcher. The processing plants that the animals will be sent to are all government certified.

After the 4-H sale, your picture will be taken with the animal you have purchased. You will receive a copy of this picture along with a personal recognition for your contribution from the members. As well, a group thank-you ad will be sent to local papers, advertising your support of the program and its’ members.

Auction 101

Before the Auction:

  • Beef, Lamb, and Hogs are for sale
  • Auction Starts at 2:30pm in the beef ring
  • All potential buyer are invited to the buyer’s reception that will be held near the beef ring at 1:00pm
  • Potential buyers may qualify to receive a free day pass for the Auction.
  • All potential buyers must register and obtain a bidding number before bidding

During the Auction:

  • Price is buy the pound live weight
    • 220 hog @ $4.00/lb = $880
  • After purchase an auction representative will have you sign your buyer confirmation sheet
  • Please pay for your purchase at the auction table (via cheque or credit card) or arrange for invoicing
  • We ask that buyers have pictures done after the sale with the 4-H member and the animal they have purchased

After the Auction:

  • Transportation to the abattoir has been arranged and provided.
  • The buyer is responsible for paying the processing fee to the abattoir, this varies by animal type, please see details below. This will be collected at time of purchase.
  • The buyer must supply instructions for cut and wrap and who they would like to do this; you may consult the auction table for information on processors.
  • The buyer is responsible for the cut and wrap costs.

Processing Charges:

  • Beef – $200.00 plus tax (if cut & wrapped at Processor)
  • Hog – $75.00 plus tax (if cut & wrapped at Processor)
  • Lamb – $70.00 flat rate includes cut & wrap up to 35 lbs.
  • Lamb – $45.00 plus tax (not cut & wrapped at Processor)
  • Any meat not cut & wrapped at Hidden Valley Processing will be subject to a delivery charge:
    • Beef – $50.00, Lamb or Hog – $20.00

Cutting and Wrapping Charges:

  • Beef – .75 cents per lb. plus tax
  • Hog – .75 cents per lb. plus tax (sausage and smoking extra)
  • Lamb – .75 cents up to 35 lbs. Oversize .80 cents per lb.

Sausage and Smoking:

  • Sausage – $2.50 per lb. plus tax
  • Cure & Smoke – $1.75 per lb. plus tax
  • Bacon Slice – $15.00 per slab

Grocery Stores or Butcher Shops: There will be a charge of .40 cents/lb for 1/4’ing carcasses or getting block ready as well as delivery to your store.
