Ladysmith RCMP are investigating a two vehicle collision that occurred on Tuesday, and suspect alcohol was involved in the incident.

Officers were called to the scene around 10:15 a.m. on November 20th, and found two vehicles to be heavily damaged at the intersection of High Street and 4th Avenue in Ladysmith.

While extensive damage was done to the vehicles, the suspected impaired driver received no injuries, while the victim driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local health centre.

Police determined that the suspected impaired driver failed to stop at a stop sign on High Street, and struck the other vehicle which had the right of way as it crossed the intersection.

Ladysmith RCMP say that since alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor, criminal charges of impaired driving and driving over 80 mg/% will be recommended against the 76-year-old male driver, who is also a resident of the area.

According to police, this collision marks 135th driver to be charged in 2018 via the Criminal Code of Canada, or through Provincial Legislation for impaired driving.

62 of these incidents occurred within the town of 10,000 residents, while the remaining 73 took place in areas near Ladysmith.

“The RCMP will continue with their efforts to detect and apprehended any driver, who are either operating or are in care and control of a vehicle, while their ability is impaired,” said Staff Sergeant K.W. Brissard, Detachment Commander of the RCMP’s Ladysmith Detachment in a press release.

“This commitment is not solely to hold suspects accountable, but as importantly, to keep the roadways safe for other vehicles, their occupants, as well as pedestrians.”
