The University of Victoria and its undergraduate student society (the UVSS) are currently hosting their fifth annual Mental Health Awareness Week from January 14-18.
Throughout the week, organizers have arranged a series of featured events that aim to relax, rejuvenate, and boost the spirits of everyone who attends.
Overview of events
On Monday, leaders from the Student Health Ambassador and Peer Educator (SHAPE) program taught a yoga lesson in the Residence Resource Hub (Hodges building, room 104) from 5:00-6:00pm.
Tuesday’s event was a spin class exclusively for UVic staff and faculty in the CARSA (Centre for Athletics, Recreation, and Special Abilities) Spin Studio.
Shane Koyzcan, an internationally recognized spoken word artist from Penticton, will be performing at the Farquaar Auditorium on Wednesday. His poem “To This Day” has over 23 million views on YouTube.
Koyzcan will be performing alongside student poets and actors. Doors open at 4:30pm, and the performance goes from 5:00-7:00pm.
On Thursday, Multifaith Services will host an instructive meditation session at the Interfaith Chapel from 4:30-5:20pm. Beginners welcome! There will also be another SHAPE yoga session at the same time and place as Monday’s event.
Finally, Health Services SHAPE leaders and the West Coast College of Massage Therapy are providing massages from 10:30am-12:30pm in the McPherson Library (first floor) on Friday.
There will also be a glow-in-the-dark yoga rave in the CARSA Performance Gym at 6:00pm. Do yoga to sweet music while wearing glowing accessories and paint (provided onsite).
All events are either free or by donation.
