BC’s largest programming competition, Battlesnake, is returning to Victoria for its 2019 competition this Saturday!

Created by technology company, Sendwithus, Battlesnake gives teams just one day to to test their skills and develop an artificial intelligence snake that goes head to head with other teams’ creations until only one is left standing during a typical game of ‘snake’.

“It all started because the programmers behind it realized that Victoria had a lot of strong programming talent in the city but there was no real way for these talents to connect,” said Lisa Stappert, Marketing Coordinator for event co-sponsor, FreshWorks Studio.

“Battlesnake was created to bring developers of all skill levels together in a friendly, co-operative environment.”

Last year, over 600 developers of all skills levels converged on Victoria from across the province to compete.

This year, Sendwithus is expecting approximately 1000 participants and spectators to attend, and is putting in their own team to compete!

“The event is free and open to developers of all skill levels,” said Stappert.

“The first part of the day is actually used for teams to build their snakes and take on the so-called Bounty Snakes. The actual tournament starts at 4:00 p.m., which is when up to 8 snakes are battling each other on one game board,” said Stappert.

Winners of this fun and competitive event will receive prizes that range from $500 to $4000.

If you’re interested in watching but can’t make it to the venue, don’t worry, the competition will also be live-streamed online!

Put on your favourite programming playlist and your best 1980’s hacker persona, it’s time to get coding.
