It’s never fun when air travel goes wrong, that’s why ClaimCompass has put together a global ranking of the best airlines to help your trip go smoothly.

Out of the 150 airlines ranked, one Canadian airline ranked in the top 10.

WestJet came in 8th place with a score of 6.5/10, and is considered the best rated airline in North America.

All airlines were measured based on two categories, flight performance and claim processing rate. The average of both scores was then used as the company’s finale score.

Meanwhile, Air Canada ranked 48th overall, with a total score of 4.5/10. The airline’s low ranking largely comes from its high rate of delayed flights in 2018.

“Flights from Canadian airlines are among the most delayed in the world,” says ClaimCompass.

“31% to 34% of Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, and Porter Airlines’ flights were delayed in 2018. In other words, if you’re flying with one of these airlines there is a 1 chance out of 3 that you’ll be delayed.”

According to ClaimCompass, while Canadian airlines are prone to delays they are quick to help travellers receive compensation.

On the global average, it takes airlines approximately 4 months for consumers to be refunded for delayed, cancelled, or overbooked flights. For Canadian companies, however, that time is almost halved with customers receiving compensation in an average of 2 months.

“Canadian airlines can’t get you there on time, but sure will be helpful in getting you a refund,” says ClaimCompass.

Meanwhile, the top rated airline in the world goes to South African Airlines. In 2018, only 17.77% of their flights were delayed and customers only had to wait an average of 22 days to receive compensation or refunds.

The top 10 airlines in the world according to ClaimCompass are as follows:

  1. South African Airways – 7.4/10
  2. SAS Scandinavian – 7.3/10
  3. KLM – 7.0/10
  4. Austrian Airlines – 6.9/10
  5. Luxair – 6.8/10
  6. Volotea – 6.8/10
  7. Ryanair – 6.7/10
  8. WestJet – 6.5/10
