Fenced Dog Park, Community Garden, and New Playground Proposed for Vic West Park

Share

Victoria West Park is the second largest park in the Victoria West neighbourhood and the eighth largest in the City. The park was first established in 1921 and has seen many improvements since then to address the changing needs of local residents.

The City of Victoria is planning improvements to the park and residents are invited to share their ideas about what ideas they like best.

With Victoria’s highest percentage of licensed dogs, a growing population and a growing appetite for spaces to grow local food, it makes sense that a fenced dog park, community garden and new playground ranked high on a list of community requests for improvements to Vic West Park reads a statement released by City of Victoria.

The park currently offers a multi-use sports field for baseball and soccer, a skate park, a lawn bowling club, a basketball court, a leash-optional area, a playground, two parking areas and a public washroom.

This summer the community generated ideas for what they would like to see at Vic West Park. Based on this input, a list of improvements are now being proposed.

The community is invited to help finalize the plan.

Proposed park improvements include:

  • Fenced dog off-leash area and additional off-leash area for non-peak hours
  • Field improvements to the primary ball diamond and new seating
  • Space for a community garden
  • Larger improved playground with natural play areas and swings, climbing and spinning equipment
  • A new picnic area
  • New community ‘Play Box’ filled with sports equipment and more open space
  • Improvements to the ‘beginners’ bowl in the skate park
  • Washroom and pathway improvements
  • Improvements to the playground and beginners’ bowl of the skate park and a new fenced off-leash area for dogs will be done first.

Residents are invited to attend an Open House, on Tuesday, October 27 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club in Vic West Park. Parking is available off Bay Street, by the playground. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided.

An online survey is now available at www.haveyoursayvictoria.com.

Ideas can also be tweeted to #vicparks.
