(One of the temporary housing sites in Victoria @ 1240 Yates Street/Google Maps)

Our Place Society has posted to Facebook seeking help to set up a new home at 1240 Yates Street for 40 people who will be moving from Tent City.

The City of Victoria leased the vacant city-owned property to BC Housing, and Our Place will operate the emergency winter shelter, for four months.

The shelter will offer 24/7 support services, storage, laundry and daily meals, to 40 people without homes, until April 30.

BC Housing contributed $400,000 in funding for the new shelter. In addition, the United Way of Greater Victoria contributed $25,000, and the City invested about $45,000 to upgrade the facility for its temporary use.

The 24/7 winter shelter will open the first week of January, and Our Place could use assistance in getting it ready for the new residents. They are looking for people who can help clean, set up new tents and unroll new sleeping bags on Saturday, Jan. 2 from 1 pm to 4 pm.

If you can help, please drop by 1240 Yates Street. Everyone welcome.

The society are also looking for Arts and Crafts supplies specifically for the shelter. If you can help, please drop them off at Our Place tagged for the shelter.
