According to Statistics Canada, the country’s population now totals over 36 million – up 62,800 Canadians from October.

Canada’s population growth rate from October 2015 to January 2016, increased 0.17% – twice the rate observed for the same quarter in 2014. The agency estimated the population at 36,048,500.

The increase between October and January, came from 95,300 births compared with 67,900 deaths, a difference of 27,400, based on preliminary estimates.

Net international migration was 35,400, up 600 from the same quarter in 2014.

Over the last year, population growth slowed slightly from 1.04% in 2014 to 0.95% in 2015.

This slowdown was much greater in Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories, however, for a second consecutive quarter, population growth was positive in all provinces and territories, except Yukon.
