Highway 14 overhead sign and road improvements study in the works

Share

A new digital overhead sign is being installed on Sooke Road to provide up-to-date information on road conditions and lane closures to drivers travelling west on highway.

The province says the changeable message sign will be constructed on Highway 14 at Awsworth Road, about 500 metres west of the new West Shore Parkway extension that will connect to the highway. The sign will face drivers heading westbound, toward Sooke.

About 7,000 vehicles travelling from Langford to Sooke each day will pass under the new $250,000 sign. Work will begin this month, and is expected to be finished during the summer.

The province has also awarded CHM2M Hill with a $130,000 contract to assess possible future improvements to Highway 14 between Langford and Sooke.

This study will review the current condition and performance of the highway, examine potential upgrades for both the short and long term, and examine ways to promote greater transit use and encourage cycling.

The study will begin during the summer of 2016 and the final report is expected to be available in the spring of 2017.
