Remembrance Day

Canadians across the country will mark Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 by attending ceremonies to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. There will also be related events such as concerts on and leading up to the day.

Below is a list of some locations where Remembrance Day ceremonies and events will take place around the Capital Region

Remembrance Day Ceremonies

Victoria – Legislature Grounds

Ceremony will take place at the Cenotaph at 10:45am. An open house and reception will be held between 12-3pm following the ceremony at Branch #127, 514 Government Street.

Attendants will include the Lieutenant Governor and other dignitaries.

Esquimalt – The Royal Canadian Legion to Esquimalt Cenotaph

Marchers will fall in line at 10:40am in the parking lot to march to the Cenotaph in Memorial Park. Gods Acre – 1200 Colville Road/ Esquimalt Cenotaph – Esquimalt Road

Everyone is welcome back to the legion, 622 Admirals Road, post-ceremony to enjoy refreshments. All children are invited to the upper lounge for refreshments.

Saanich Cenotaph (outside Municipal Hall)

Mayor Richard Atwell & Council extend an invitation to attend the District of Saanich’s annual Remembrance Day Ceremony starting at 10:45am at the Cenotaph in front of the Municipal Hall.

770 Vernon Avenue. Vernon Avenue is closed to traffic during the ceremony, which will be attended by local dignitaries and veterans.

Oak Bay Cenotaph – War Memorial

Join in the Oak Bay Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Cenotaph in Uplands Park. Everyone is welcome to attend. The ceremony will commence at 10:55am.

Colwood – Royal Roads University (in the Italian Gardens)

Everyone is invited to attend a Remembrance Day Service at Royal Roads University, 2005 Sooke Road, hosted by the Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club. It will take place Nov. 11 at 10:40 a.m. in the Italian Garden, followed by refreshments in Hatley Castle.

West Shore Cenotaph in Langford – Veterans Memorial Park

A time to remember, join the Langford Legion #91 beginning at 10:45am to honour those who have severed & protected our country. Veterans Memorial Parkway off Goldstream Road. Gordon United Church choir and Westshore Community Concert Band in attendace.

West Shore –  Metchosin Fire Hall

Join the 14th Juan de Fuca Scouts and Guides at 10:45am for the march from the Metchosin Fire Hall to the St. Mary the Virgin Heritage Church.  The Remembrance Day ceremony begins at 10:55 am.  Refreshments will be served at the Fire Hall following the ceremony.

Central Saanich – Peacekeeping Memorial Cenotaph (Municipal Hall)

Wreath Laying Ceremony will begin at 11am at the Central Saanich Municipal Hall under the half-mast flags. 1903 Mt. Newton Road.

Sidney Cenotaph – Mary Winspear Centre, Sidney Cenotaph

The Parade of Veterans begins at 10:30, starting at the Mary Winspear Centre and ending at the Cenotaph in front of the Town Hall. The parade will proceed down Beacon Avenue, left on Second Street to the Cenotaph at Town Hall on Sidney Avenue.

The service will begin at 10:50am & conclude at 11:20am with the March Past & Salute to follow. The fly past will be during the two minutes of silence.

Sooke Cenotaph – Royal Canadian Legion

Parade form-up at 10:15 am at Evergreen Mall, 10:30 am parade march off from mall to Legion Cenotaph. 11:00 am service begins with 11:11 am moment of silence.

Following the service, refreshments will be available in the Legion Lounge, Branch #54, 6726 Eustace Road, Sooke, for adults and upstairs for youth attending.

 

Other Remembrance Day Events

Lest We Forget – Victoria Symphony Concert

What: Join the Victoria Symphony for a special concert of remembrance. Experience this moving tribute to the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers, military personnel and those affected by war and violence around the globe. The acoustics of the Bay Street Armoury create a unique surrounding for this emotional concert filled with orchestral and choral music, poetry and stunning visuals.

Remembrance Day Open House at Mary Winspear Centre

What: Enjoy a warm drink and sweet treat before and after the Sidney Remembrance Day Parade. Come inside to view Memorial Park Remembers – a permanent display in the Myfanwy Pavelic Gallery.
When: November 11, 2016, 9 AM
Where: 2243 Beacon Avenue, Sidney

How They So Softly Rest – CapriCCio Vocal Ensemble

What: CapriCCio Vocal Ensemble presents its annual Remembrance Day concert, “How They So Softly Rest”, featuring music of Healey Willan, John Rutter and others; a World Premiere of “The Anxious Dead”, a work by Canadian composer Justin H. Bush and based on the John McCrae poem of the same name; with Traditional Observances for the Battle of the Somme centenary.
When: November 11, 2016, 2 PM – 4 PM
Where: Christ Church Cathedral, 930 Burdett Ave
Admission: Veterans free admission. 12 & under free with ticket holder. $25/$22/$10 available at Ivy’s Bookshop, Munro’s Books, Long and McQuade, Christ Church Cathedral Office, online or at the door.

Remembrance Day Dance

What: Remembrance Day Dance at Langford Legion.
When: November 11th, 2016, doors open at 6:30pm. Dance is from 7 PM – 11 PM.
Where: 761 Station Avenue
Admission: Tickets are $5 until November 10th at the bar.

For those unable to attend a Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11; please take a moment of silence and reflect on our Canadian Veterans and Soldiers who have served and continue to serve our country during the times of war, conflict and peace.
