New building with 82 social housing to replace former motel on Gorge Road East

Share

A new residential development slated for Gorge Road East will replace a 21-unit repurposed motel with a new affordable rental housing, after the Victoria Cool Aid Society received a $5 million grant from the province.

The new building will include 32 units for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

Current tenants living in Cedar Grove will be re-located and will then have the option to move into the new building.

The announcement is part of the province’s ‘housing first program’  announced in October aimed at creating 2,000 new units.

The province also announced Island Women Against Violence on Salt Spring Island would receive $4.5 million in capital funding toward a two-phase development providing upgrades to existing buildings at Croftonbrook, a five-acre parcel in Ganges Village.

The project will create 52 new affordable rentals to the current 20 seniors’ rental units, including 18 units for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

The projects are a partnership between the province, the Capital Regional District and Island Health.
