BC Housing won’t rebuild burned subsidized townhouses

Share

Eight units of low-income housing on Hillside Avenue damaged in a 2016 fire will not be rebuilt.

BC Housing on Thursday cited the advanced age of the development in their decision.

The Evergreen Terrace townhouses, of which eight units were burned, are close to 50-years-old. Flames and explosions were first reported on November 18, 2016.

Those eight units are now in the process of being demolished and replaced with new green space and landscaping.

Cause of Fire Still Unknown

During the blaze, two dogs died, and thirty-five people were displaced from eight townhouse units. The total cost of the fire’s damage is estimated to be over $1 million.

The tenants have all been permanently relocated, and the future of the entire Evergreen Terraces site is being looked at by BC Housing.

According to BC Housing, the investigation into the cause of the fire was inconclusive. However, in the days following the fire, neighbours told CTV Vancouver Island that the occupants of the suite where the fire originated had been the subject of complaints and were in the process of being evicted.
