Over two-thirds of Canadians kept their landlines in 2016

Nostalgia for the 80s is bigger than it’s ever been in 2017.

Netflix’s homage to the 80’s known as Stranger Things broke streaming records. People lined up earlier this year to watch the Stephen King thriller “It” which was also steeped in 80’s culture.

It seems Canadians are embracing other elements of the 80s as well. StatsCan reported that 66.8% of Canadians still had a landline despite 87.9% owning a cell phone.

In British Columbia, 61.4% of those that took the poll said they still have landlines while 89.7% also have cellphones.

Newfoundland and Labrador have the highest percentage of landlines in Canada, where 86.6% of people reported owning one.

Reasons for people not cutting the cord include a landline’s reliability during emergencies, using it as a more cost-effective measure than cellphones, and the comfort towards using it that familiarity brings.
