Nanaimo RCMP arrest sleeping man in stolen car full of stolen goods

Sometimes suspects leave a difficult trail, full of deception and misdirection. Other times, suspects park their stolen car on the side of the road and leave their door open, taunting fate.

That’s what happened on Tuesday night.

At around 2:30 a.m., a Nanaimo RCMP patrol car noticed a vehicle parked near the shoulder of Shenton Rd and Labieux Rd.

An officer approached the vehicle and found the driver-side door ajar, with a man sleeping at the wheel.

The officer then ran the license plates and discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen from the area three days prior.

The sleeping driver, 34-year-old Jackson Filgate, was then arrested and a search of the car was conducted.

Inside the vehicle, police found a variety of items that are suspected to be stolen. The items include alcohol, ID’s, break-in tools, a security jacket from Port Alberni, the license plates to a vehicle reported stolen from Langford, and a substance that is believed to be crystal meth.

“The officers have a lot of work ahead of them as they attempt to sort out where and from who the items were stolen,” said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Many of the tools and items found have no identifying markers which makes it that more difficult to determine where they were stolen from.”

Filgate faces a total of 15 charges including possession of stolen property, possession of break-and-enter tools, theft of mail, and breach of probation.
