Comox Valley RCMP are seeking witnesses in an incident where a man may have been attempting to lure a child with candy.

On Monday, November 12th at about 1:30 p.m., a black van pulled up beside an 11-year-old girl who was riding her bike on Willemar Avenue in Courtenay.

According to a release from RCMP, the man driving the vehicle did not speak to the girl, but held up two bags of candy and pointed to them. She rode away on her bicycle immediately.

The driver is described as a Caucasian man between 25-45 years old, has a small light-coloured goatee and was wearing a black cowboy-like hat.

“Investigators would like to speak with anyone who was in the area on Saturday afternoon and may have spotted the van,” said Cst. Monika Terragni, spokesperson for the Comox Valley RCMP.

“The van was described to investigators as a nearly new, black van tinted rear windows – the driver pulled into the oncoming lane of traffic to speak with the young girl.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 25-338-1321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
