According to fire officials, the incident was apparently caused by debris placed next to the siding and then set on fire.

It was set on the south side of the school, in an area which is sheltered from view by a large retaining wall.

Fire crews were not able to see any individuals or vehicles in the area as they were on their way to contain the blaze.

“It would take some time for the fire to ignite so we are asking the public to call us if they saw anyone one or any vehicles in or around the school from 6 am to 7:30 am,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.  If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
