An alleged car thief in Langford was recently arrested by West Shore RCMP with the help of a nearby homeowner.

At around 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15th, West Shore RCMP officer spotted a recently stolen ‘98 White Ford Escape while patrolling northbound on Millstream Road in Langford.

When police attempted to pull over the driver of the stolen SUV, the suspect attempted to flee and soon crashed into several parked vehicles.

The collision occurred in the 600-block of McCallum Road, alerting a local homeowner who came out just as the suspect was exiting the vehicle to flee.

The Langford resident began chasing the alleged thief on foot and was able to catch and restrain him until RCMP arrived.

“The homeowner held onto the suspect until police arrived moments later. The 24 year old male suspect is a resident of Victoria who was arrested,” said Cst. Nancy Saggar.

The suspect is being charged with possession of stolen property, flight from the police, and breach of undertaking.

Although police have thanked and commended the homeowner for his bravery, they recommend others do not the same.

“We are thankful of the homeowner’s assistance in the case, however we do not recommend approaching or holding down a suspect as this can be dangerous and unpredictable,” adds Cst. Saggar.
