A routine traffic stop for a minor violation ended up leading to a drug bust in Nanaimo on Sunday, according to the RCMP.
On November 8 at approximately 12:30 a.m., a Nanaimo RCMP officer stopped a vehicle near the intersection of East Wellington Road and Bowen Road due to the vehicle’s insurance being expired.
The vehicle had been stopped in an unsafe location and the 35-year-old male driver was told that it would need to be towed.
While waiting for the tow vehicle, the officer took inventory of the vehicle’s contents, including a shoulder bag.
The bag was found to contain almost $5000 in Canadian currency, 91 grams of methamphetamine, 74 grams of fentanyl, 76 grams of GHB, 14 grams of morphine and approximately 2 grams of heroin.
The driver was arrested on charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, then later served with a Promise to Appear and released.
His first court date is set for February 9, 2021, in Nanaimo Provincial Court.
