Island Health opens new COVID-19 testing site in Nanaimo

A new and expanded COVID-19 testing site has been opened in Nanaimo, replacing an existing collection site.

In a statement Tuesday, Island Health said they have chosen the Vancouver Island University campus, at 900 Fifth Street, as the site of a new COVID-19 testing centre where people in the region can book a test.

This new site replaces an existing testing location at Grant Avenue, and increases capacity by adding two new lanes.

“Staff will be able to work in heated kiosks, providing them much needed protection from the weather as we head into winter,” reads the notice from Island Health.

Like all other testing facilities on Vancouver Island, COVID-19 tests are conducted by appointment only at the VIU location, which will be open every day between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The announcement comes after weeks of Central Vancouver Island reporting more new daily cases than any other part of the Island Health authority.

As of Monday, November 30, there were 141 active COVID-19 cases in the region, compared to 58 in South Island and 37 in North Island.
