One person dies of COVID-19 related to outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital

Over the weekend, 35 more people lost their lives to COVID-19 in B.C. One of those people lived in Greater Victoria.

Island Health has confirmed that the person who lost their life to COVID-19 in the region over the weekend contracted the virus during the outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

Whether they were a patient or staff member at the hospital is not being divulged by Island Health out of respect for their privacy.

“To the family and friends of this individual, please know that the entire Island Health family grieves with you during this incredibly difficult time,” said Island Health President and CEO, Kathy MacNeil in an emailed statement.

“For the Island Health team members who provided compassionate care and support, you are in my thoughts and I am grateful for your efforts.”

Thus far, seven patients and five staff members at Saanich Peninsula Hospital are known to have contracted COVID-19 during the outbreak.

As of December 7, there are 199 active cases of COVID-19 in the Island Health region.
