A Courtenay teacher is kicking off the new year with a surprise $500,000 lotto win.

Rebecca MacKenzie, a teacher of math and french, matched all four Extra numbers in the Lotto 6/49 draw on December 26, 2020.

MacKenzie had bought a combo ticket with BC/49 and found out about the big win online.

“I logged on to check. My BC/49 ticket said it was a winner, and I had won $1 there,” she said.

“I saw I also had a winner for the Lotto 6/49 draw, and that one said $500,000. I remember turning to my boyfriend and telling him ‘I think I just won $500,000’ quietly.”

The Courtenay woman says she was in disbelief. MacKenzie had been house hunting recently and she says the $500,000 will open up new options.

“I was wondering if it was really real…There were a few happy tears of surprise, for sure.”
