Nanaimo RCMP have issued warrants for a local man on charges of assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and fleeing from police.

33-year-old Michael Bonson failed to appear in Nanaimo Provincial court and efforts to locate him have been unsuccessful.

Police believe he is actively taking measures to avoid arrest.

The original charges against Bonson were brought after an incident on September 21, 2020 at 2 a.m.

During a vehicle stop in downtown Nanaimo, an officer found reasonable grounds to arrest Bonson for possession of illegal drugs.

When the officer attempted to place Bonson under arrest, a violent struggle ensued and the officer was assaulted.

The officer deployed a taser to no effect and Bonson broke free. The suspect then got back into his vehicle and drove off.

The officer did not require medical treatment and was able to continue his shift.

Michael Bonson is described as a white man, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 180 pounds with short blonde hair and blue eyes. He has a moustache and goatee.

Bonson’s primary vehicle is a white older model Nissan Pathfinder. Nanaimo RCMP say he may not be using the vehicle due to various mechanical issues.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Michael Bonson is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2020-34702.
