Body of man pulled from the Cowichan River Friday afternoon

The body of a man believed to be in his 40s was pulled from the Cowichan River Friday afternoon.

RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are now working to establish the identity of the man.

Just after 1:30 p.m.May 21st, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and emergency medical crews were alerted to a body spotted floating downstream of the Cowichan River in the vicinity of the 3000-block of Allenby Road.

A short time later, a second caller reported seeing the individual behind a business in the 400-block of Cowichan Way.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and the Cowichan Search And Rescue were able to retrieve the body and return it to shore.

“Investigators are now focussed on establishing an identity for the deceased, believed to be an adult man in his 40’s,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesman for the BC RCMP.

Police have been scouring the shorelines upstream from where the man was pulled from the water, in an effort to advance their ongoing investigation.

The BC Coroners Service are also assisting in the investigation.
