Woman dies after being pinned under vehicle in Union Bay crash

A woman died of injuries she sustained in a single vehicle crash that occurred in Union Bay, south of Courtenay, on Thursday.

Comox Valley RCMP say that witnesses called 911 at approximately 11:40 a.m. on June 3 for a report of a vehicle that had driven off the road and down an embankment in the 5800-block of Island Highway South.

Several witnesses stopped to help the occupants of the vehicle, a brown 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. They managed to lift the vehicle up and off of the passenger, who had been trapped underneath.

The driver sustained only minor injuries. The passenger was airlifted to hospital, but died of her injuries on June 4, 2021.

“The cause of this crash is still under investigation,” said Cst. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer.

“Investigators are looking for witnesses who observed the collision, who observed the vehicle prior to the collision, or who may have dash-cam footage.”

The RCMP say the the Coroners Service has also been notified and will be conducting its own investigation.
