A tragic fall that left a person stranded at the bottom of a well in cold water, could have gone a lot worse.

According to Pender Island Fire Rescue, on August 13th, a neighbour heard a faint voice coming from a well at a property on Pender Island and proceeded to call 911 after discovering someone had fallen into a 15’ well.

Between the fall and when the neighbour called 911, the person spent an unknown period of time surrounded by approximately 15’ of extremely cold water that was well over their head.

“After calling for help for an unknown period of time neighbors eventually heard a faint voice discovered the individual and called 911,” Pender Island Fire Rescued said in a post on Facebook.

Emergency crews responded and after a quick assessment of the person’s condition and potential hazards, they executed a technical rescue, lowering a specialist into the well to make contact with the patient.

The patient was secured in a harness and raised to safety; they were then transferred to BC Ambulance and surprisingly only suffered minor injuries.
