Another Christmas event has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The Ladysmith Festival of Lights announced this year’s Light Up festival has been cancelled due to risks relating to the ongoing pandemic.

The event was scheduled for Thursday, November 25th.

“This decision to cancel Light Up for this year has been made with a view towards our responsibilities to this community,” the organization said in a statement.

“Potentially, the health of our members, various service groups, the many volunteers and our community could be placed at risk by staging a large public gathering.”

Although the official event – which draws thousands of visitors – has been cancelled, the lights and rooftop decorations will still be turned on in November for the public to enjoy.

On Saturday, the Peninsula Celebrations Society announced their Sidney Sparkles Christmas Parade would be postponed until next year.

“The Peninsula Celebrations Society remains committed to providing safe, family-friendly events for the local community” they said in their statement.

“After significant consideration, the Sidney Sparkles Christmas Parade steering committee has opted to postpone the return of the holiday parade for 2021 due to an abundance of caution surrounding COVID-19.”

Although the parade won’t be moving forward this year, the Peninsula Celebrations Society urges the public to stay up to date for future event announcements via their social media and website.
