Another ‘Stand with Ukraine’ rally is taking place in Victoria this Sunday

As the Ukraine crisis continues, another Stand with Ukraine rally is set for this weekend along Douglas Street in BC’s capital.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) Victoria branch is hosting the rally, together with the UVic Ukrainian Students’ Society and Victoria Ukrainian Cultural Centre.

It’s scheduled for Sunday, March 6th at 12:30 p.m.

Only this time, organizers ask those wanting to take part to form a line starting outside the Ukrainian Cultural Centre at 3277 Douglas Street, past Mayfair Mall and into the downtown core.

UCC Victoria president Devon Sereda Goldie tells Victoria Buzz that the goal is to raise awareness, spreading solidarity to those who drive past.

“So we’re hoping to get a line of us from the Cultural Centre all the way downtown and have people with posters and noisemakers and flags,” said Goldie.

“Anybody driving through downtown Victoria and the Mayfair areas will see us and hopefully be reminded of what’s happening in Ukraine.”

Last Sunday, large crowds gathered on the lawn of BC’s Legislature and rallied for the war-stricken country. It was an “incredibly successful and very moving” day for Goldie.

“I truly was not expecting such a large turnout, and it was very powerful to see how many Ukrainians not only came out but also how many people from Victoria came out to support our community,” she said.

Sold out of Ukrainian flags:

Victorians are moving in herds to purchase Ukrainian flags, as inventory flies off the shelves of The Flag Shop in Victoria.

The downtown store, in business for over 30 years, is currently sold out of the country’s blue and yellow flag, as staff work overtime to fulfill a waitlist of orders.

“As soon as [Vladimir] Putin crossed the border, we sold out within a few minutes. So now what we’re doing is making them as fast as we can,” said owner Paul Servos.

The shop delivered flags to numerous well-known buildings around town, including a giant 12-foot Ukrainian flag now soaring above the Grand Pacific Hotel.
