Here’s why you may hear gunshots from Esquimalt today

People in and around Esquimalt shouldn’t be alarmed if they hear loud bangs coming from the local naval base this morning.

The Naval Fleet School (Pacific) Seamanship Division says it’s conducting ceremonial saluting gun firing drills around Duntze Head at CFB Esquimalt from 10 a.m. until noon.

“Residents may hear the periodic firing on the gun during these hours,” Maritime Forces Pacific said, noting drills will be conducted using practice blank ammunition.

According to the navy, bangs may be heard in neighbouring areas due to several environmental factors like temperature, humidity, and wind direction.
