Grab the beach towel and umbrella—a southern Vancouver Island beach has been named one of the best worldwide, according to an international travel website.

Located near Sooke, Mystic Beach ranked 42nd on Big7Travel’s annual “50 Best Beaches In The World” and was the only one in Canada to make the list.

“Set along the Juan de Fuca Trail, the white sandy beach is set against lush forest, with a picturesque waterfall cascading right into the brilliant blue sea,” wrote Big7Travel.

While the trek from the parking lot to the beach is about 2 kilometres, hikers are taken through an ancient forest that features a suspension bridge and several creeks, Victoria Trails says.

“As the sound of the waves grows louder, the trail follows along some stairs made out of a fallen tree as you veer to the left and make the final descent towards the beach,” states a post to VictoriaTrails.com

“Just after the log stairs end, you reach an opening where you can walk down onto Mystic Beach,” the post reads, noting visitors can take in the Pacific coastline views from an on-site rope swing or their tent, as camping is permitted.

Big7Travel says “50 Best” rankings stem from previous media results, contributions from its editorial team, and Blue Flag—a program recognizing beaches that follow strict environmental and accessibility criteria.

With the complete list available online here, Playa Conchal in Costa Rica scored the top spot, while Mystic Beach was sandwiched between Aruba’s Eagle Beach and Kenya’s Diani Beach, which came in 41st and 43rd, respectively.
