A Nanaimo security guard sustained several cuts and bruises to his face after he was attacked while on patrol over the weekend.

Nanaimo RCMP say the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday October 22nd, on Victoria Crescent.

The security guard told officers he knew who his attacker was and that the suspect had fled just prior to police attending.

He told police he was walking past the A&W restaurant when for unknown reasons the suspect appeared with a pipe and began swinging it at him.

The security guard managed to raise his hands to protect himself and was struck by the pipe then punched in the face several times.

Police said paramedics assessed the victim on scene, however, he elected to not to attend the Nanaimo hospital for medical treatment.

About one hour later, the suspect was located in the parking lot of the 7-11 on Terminal Avenue and was arrested without incident.

On Sunday October 23rd, a hearing was held at the Nanaimo detachment for 52-year old Michael Maud of Nanaimo.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Maud, who is of no fixed address, was charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

He  was then remanded into police custody to await his next court appearance which is set for Tuesday November 15th in Nanaimo Provincial Court.
