23-year-old motorcyclist suffers serious injuries after colliding with vehicle in Nanaimo

A collision between a vehicle and motorcycle in Nanaimo last week has left a young man severely injured.

At around 7:45 a.m. Thursday, March 30th, the motorcyclist and the other vehicle collided at the intersection of Howard Avenue and Fifth Street.

Firefighters, paramedics and police arrived on scene and found the injured 23-year-old man had been flung from his motorcycle as a result of the crash.. He had been driving an older model Suzuki bike.

The driver of the other vehicle, which was an older model Hyundai, was a 70-year-old woman who did not sustain any injuries. Police say she was “left shaken” by the ordeal.

Preliminary findings indicate that the Hyundai had stopped at a stop sign and was crossing Fifth Street when the collision occurred with the motorbike, which was travelling eastbound.

The woman driving the Hyundai remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Police say drugs and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors, but the speed of the motorcycle has not been ruled out.

The intersection of Howard Avenue and Fifth Street was closed for several hours so investigators could examine the area and look for evidence.

Both the Hyundai and the motorcycle had to be towed from the scene.

Police ask that anyone who has information about this incident contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
