Up to 90 km/h gusts: Wind warning strikes again for Greater Victoria on Thursday

Share

At a time when the weather is usually twice as warm as it has been, strong winds will be coming over southern Vancouver Island to blow some salt into the wound.

Strong southeastern winds will reach between 70 km/h and 90 km/h on Thursday, April 20th.

These current weather conditions have resulted in an official wind warning on behalf of Environment Canada.

The warning is in effect for Greater Victoria, the Haro Strait and the Southern Gulf Islands and will last from Thursday afternoon to the evening.

“A low pressure system will track across Vancouver Island today,” said Environment Canada.

“Ahead of the system, strong southeast winds 70 km/h gusting to 90 will develop over the exposed coastal sections near Haro Strait and Southern Gulf Islands.”

Winds are expected to ease this evening.

As always with wind warnings, power outages across the Greater Victoria and Gulf Islands regions are possible. Environment Canada also warns residents of these regions to be wary of fallen tree branches that could cause damages to vehicles and homes or may cause injuries to people.

Clouds and showers will accompany the wind moving in on Victoria.

The high is expected to be 8°C on Thursday and the overnight low will reach as low as 5°C. The national weather authority calls for a 30% chance of intermittent showers throughout the day and evening.

Looking ahead, the weather forecast is bleak for the remainder of the week. On average, Victoria’s weather has been just half the median temperature of what it normally is in April.

Following the weekend, Environment Canada is predicting the sun will be out once again and temperatures will be back in the mid-teens.
