Investigators from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are reaching out to the public for help in identifying two potential witnesses related to a sexual assault investigation.

The incident occurred on May 16th,  near the 200-block of Trans Canada Highway in Duncan. A woman reported being sexually assaulted by an unknown man while walking on a trail between McAdam Park and Tzouhalem Road/Trunk Road.

Upon receiving the report, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP promptly responded to the scene before 7 p.m. They initiated immediate patrols in an effort to locate the suspect, but unfortunately, were unable to find anyone matching the description provided.

The victim was immediately transported to the hospital, where she received the necessary medical treatment.

RCMP conducted a thorough video surveillance canvas of the area and collected several witness statements. These efforts have led them to seek the public’s help in identifying two people of interest connected to the case.

The first person of interest, whom the police are eager to speak with, is an individual who aided the victim in reaching a nearby gas station, where she was able to call for help.

Described as a man wearing a black t-shirt and grey shorts, police said his cooperation and involvement in the incident could provide valuable information to the ongoing investigation.

The second man, who is described as wearing a blue tank top and black shorts, was likely in the area before the victim was able to get help.

RCMP is urging anyone who may have seen or interacted with either individual or has any information related to the incident to come forward.

“Every investigation is unique and we must take considerable care to gather evidence, work with victims and then provide accurate and current information to the public,” says Inspector Chris Bear, officer in charge of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

“Investigators are now seeking the public’s help in identifying these two persons of interest. Police believe these individuals may have crucial information to help advance this investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
