‘Sustainable cancer care’: New cancer center coming to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital

Share

The people of Nanaimo as well as surrounding communities are now one step closer to having accessible cancer care in their community.

A new concept plan was approved for a new cancer centre at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH), as well as general hospital upgrades—this includes renovating and expanding the existing community oncology clinic.

“We must ensure people in BC can get access to the care they need when they need it. That is why Nanaimo will soon be home to a new cancer care centre,” said Premier David Eby.

Right now, they are in the business-planning phase, which will quickly solidify the scope and budget of the project.

The expected services will include:

  • radiation therapy
  • an outpatient ambulatory care unit
  • a PET/CT machine
  • a new radiation-treatment space with four shielded treatment rooms

In a statement, the Minister of Health, Adrian Dix, noted that this will be crucial in achieving sustainable cancer care provincewide. So, not only will the citizens in and around Nanaimo be positively impacted, but Vancouver Island and the mainland will be as well.

The business plan is expected to be approved in fall 2023.
