Another vehicle loses a tire and catches fire due to impaired driving in Saanich

Saanich Police were dealing with yet another impaired driver.

On the evening of Wednesday, June 14th, witnesses reported to police that an erratic driver was swerving all over the road and hit a curb on Cook Street near Quadra Street.

The situation escalated when the driver’s vehicle collided with another curb near the intersection near Douglas Street at Saanich Road, causing it to lose its front tire.

To compound the issue, the vehicle subsequently caught fire.

After the chaos unfolded, the driver was first rushed to hospital, however, it wasn’t long before they were whisked away to the Saanich Police Department to undergo a thorough Drug Recognition Evaluation test.

The driver refused to comply which resulted in criminal charges and he was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, and will appear in court in August.

“Over the past week we have investigated several impaired drivers, the circumstances of which were all preventable,” said Cst. Markus Anastasiades.

“While no persons were seriously injured in any of these recent incidents, impaired driving still remains the single most important factor contributing to serious road crashes and one of our top traffic enforcement priorities at the Saanich Police Department.”

On Monday, Saanich Police responded to a report about an erratic driver travelling on West Saanich Road near Quadra Street.

The vehicle, missing a front wheel, prompted immediate concern among witnesses who dialed emergency services.

Police officers located the disabled vehicle in the 4200-block of Glanford Avenue. It had come to a halt after its entire passenger-side wheel assembly had broken.

The driver was subsequently arrested and is now facing impaired driving charges following the incident that sparked a small grass fire on the shoulder of Glanford Road.

Police also dealt with two other incidents last weekend where impaired drivers attempted to feel police in both cases.
