Highway 4 in Port Alberni will reopen in phases starting at the end of June

An updated traffic advisory regarding Highway 4 out of Port Alberni has been released by the province.

After a wildfire shut down Highway 4 on June 6th, travelers have been using the detours to ensure the safety and support of crews as they fight the Cameron Lake Bluffs wildfire.

As of the weekend of June 24th and 25th, a phased reopening will commence — limited to single-lane traffic until risk assessments have been completed.

For now, crews continue to clear out debris, test slope stability, and monitor the fire damage in order to determine other needs for recovery.

According to a media release, a temporary load-bearing wall will be constructed in the eastbound lane of Highway 4 as a safeguard against potential falling debris and a protective mesh will act as a barrier to falling rock and trees as the area continues to recover from fire damage.

The ministry asks drivers to use patience, warning that traffic queues are expected to be extensive during this time.

Until the highway is fully open, the detour will remain available for public travel.

Commercial vehicles carrying essential goods and services continue to have access to Highway 4.

The ministry is hoping for a full reopening of the highway in mid-July.
