Exciting news, Victoria!
It has just been announced that the City of Victoria will be the host for the 2024 Hockey Day in Canada and we have details for you.
The week-long celebration will kick off on Saturday, January 20th at Ship Point in the Inner Harbour. A traditional welcoming from the Songhees and Esquimalt Nation will commence as the Stanley Cup is paddled into the Victoria harbour.
Later in the evening, spectators are invited to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to witness the Victoria Royals in action!
During game two of the Stanley Cup final, Ron McLean revealed the event would take place in Victoria, the home of the Victoria Royals of the WHL and many past and present players in the NHL.
“This event will bring vibrancy into our downtown core over a period of four to five days with celebrations and activities,” said John Wilson, President/CEO of the Wilson’s Group of Companies/Chair of Victoria Hockey Legacy Society.
Victoria will be the central hub for the broadcast and will feature the events and all seven Canadian NHL teams taking part across the country.
The variety of other events will include school visits and hockey camps for kids, NHL Alumni/Celebrity game at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, a banquet hosted by Sportsnet commentators, and more!
Additionally, a synthetic ice rink will also be showcased from Can-Ice International for the community to enjoy.
“We want to work as hard as possible leading up to the event and throughout the event to strengthen the ties to the community,” said Royals General Manager and Head Coach, Dan Price.
Though hockey will be the main focus, it has also been announced that a large component of the event will focus on Mental Health Awareness. The Courtnall Society for Mental Health, a partner of Hockey Day in Canada, will continue to raise funds.
The proceeds collected will continue to funnel into mental health organizations across Canada — bringing education, awareness, and tools to communities.
Stay tuned for further updates and announcements!
We look forward to seeing you there!
