Nanaimo motorcyclist dies after colliding with truck Monday morning

A motorcyclist has succumbed to their injuries after a collision with a large truck in Nanaimo early Monday morning.

According to the Nanaimo RCMP, the incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 19A and Oliver Road.

Reports indicate that the motorcyclist, an adult man from Nanaimo, was traveling northbound on a newer model black Yamaha when they collided with a southbound vehicle that was in the process of making a turn onto Oliver Road.

Unfortunately, despite life saving efforts, the motorcyclist succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead approximately 20 minutes later.

According to RCMP, the motorcyclist sustained critical injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Nanaimo General Hospital.

The driver of the truck involved, a grey Dodge D350, was not injured. He remained at the scene, co-operated with investigators, and alcohol and drugs have been ruled out on his part.

The BC Coroners Service confirmed they are investigating the incident.

As a result of the crash, a section of the Old Island Highway has been closed off to facilitate the ongoing investigation conducted by the police.

The victim’s family have been notified.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking for anyone with dashcam footage of the crash or pre-collision driving of the vehicles involved, to call them at 250-754-2345.
