Nanaimo RCMP said they are urgently looking to identify two key witnesses who helped locate an arsonist yesterday.

On Tuesday, July 4th, a man was arrested after setting multiple fires along Nanaimo Parkway and now RCMP are looking for the witnesses that assisted in the suspect’s arrest.

The fires were first reported at 11:55 a.m. near the intersection of Northfield Road and the Nanaimo Parkway.

Firefighters immediately responded to the reports — facing difficulties controlling the flames due to the dry grass and wind.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., the individual was apprehended and taken into police custody.

RCMP indicated that they spoke with at least two adults who pointed out the suspect, one of which chased after the suspect and tried to extinguish one of the fires.

These two unidentified individuals were in the area at around 12:20 p.m. and left shortly after.

“Investigators are extremely thankful for the information provided by witnesses that ultimately lead to the timely arrest of a suspect,” said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Police however, need to speak to these individuals to find out exactly what they saw…as they may have evidence that is key in supporting charges against the suspect.”

No injuries or structural damage has been reported as a result of the fires.

If you witnessed the fires or have dashcam video footage of the affected area between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP ask that you call them at 250-754-2345.
