The impacts of a trend never cease to amaze!

On Monday, July 24th, Cineplex announced that the two most highly-anticipated films for the summer, Barbie and Oppenheimer, brought in over $19 million in box office revenue between 1.4 million guests!

Cineplex confirmed that the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon is what tipped records.

There were over 80,000 guests “determined to experience not one, but both films” — making it the highest summer box office weekend of all time and also the second highest grossing weekend of all time.

Photoshopped images of Barbie and Oppenheimer have taken the internet by storm and many movie-goers have posted their endeavors online with dramatic outfit changes between movies, large group costumes, and SO much pink!

“This record-setting weekend box office performance of Barbie and Oppenheimer confirms that Canadians and movie-lovers around the world maintain their passion for the big screen that cannot be replicated at home,”  said Ellis Jacob, President and CEO of Cineplex.

“Experiences like these remind us all about the enduring importance that movies and movie theatres have in creating memories and how they are uniquely capable of bringing us together to share in cultural moments.”

Barbie reported to have grossed around $155 million domestically, achieving the largest opening weekend of 2023, and Oppenheimer grossed $80.5 million at the domestic box office, making it the largest IMAX opening.
